While you were sleeping

Before becoming a yoga instructor, something I was curious to know more about was what other yoga instructors who were also parents did as a daily ritual in balancing family and personal time. I was very happy to learn about some inspirational yogis and yogini’s and I would like to share a little about my routine from tucking my girls into their beds to my personal morning practice.

Late at night but not too late, I tuck my daughters in for the night. We choose a book to read or take turns picking one out on some days and on other days my youngest daughter does not want to read or listen to stories and she asks me to sing her a song. I have finally put all those choir lessons to good use. Personally, I like rock music and when the kids were babies I’d sing them to sleep with a rock song. It’s nothing too wild or loud of course. Lately, my daughter’s favorite song to fall asleep to has been the song Lullaby by Book of Love. My oldest gets annoyed after me singing it for more than five verses so usually I’ll just hold my youngest daughters hand until she falls asleep.

I kiss them on the forehead, fix their blankets, pillows and tell them I love them. I stay for a few minutes to say a prayer to bless them and then I’m ready to fall asleep.

I wake up early in the morning around 5 a.m. so I will have enough time to meditate and practice yoga. It is said that an early morning meditation is best because there are less people awake at this time creating more internal peace for you and it just so happens to be the only time I have to dedicate to myself without rushing. On some days I will meditate for half an hour and on other days an hour or more depending on my needs. In the silence of meditation, I am able to see and understand answers to specific questions I have related to my personal goals or those to help others. After my meditation, I will practice yoga for an hour or more depending on my needs. I vary my yoga practice to cater to my needs for that day also. Before I know it, time has flown by and it is now time for me to get the kids ready for going to school. It’s usually a very busy day, so I am always grateful for my morning meditation and yoga practice.
