Knowledge and Information Sharing on the Internet in the Age of Aquarius

In 1967, a group called The 5th Dimension wrote a song called “Age of Aquarius” for the hit musical, Hair. The single popularized and in 1969 rose to the top of Billboard charts. The song itself spoke about a new time when all can experience unity, as well as peace and love on Planet Earth. To many Generation Y’ers such as myself, “Age of Aquarius” was just some cheesy tune our parents would blast in the kitchen on Sunday afternoons, while they held hands and pranced around, reminiscing their own personal flower-power, make-love-not-war days.

Fast forward to 1987, when a man named José Argüelles (born on January 24, 1939, under the sun sign of Aquarius) rocked the world with the Harmonic Convergence, the world’s first global meditation that was correlated with the Mayan Calendar. This event sparked a new movement to change humanity’s perception of time as we know it. He believed that modern evils like conflicts between nations, violence and materialism would cease on December 21, 2012.

It was in the early 1990’s when the general public was given access to a very powerful communication tool called, ‘The World Wide Web.’ The net, as it was nicknamed, quickly gave us access to all kinds of information from across the globe, at the quick click of a button. Students changed the way they gathered facts for research papers, librarians re-considered their collective worth, and print media was forced to re-evaluate their marketing strategies.

For many, this shift and many others occurred quite rapidly, almost overnight and in the blink of an eye. Right after the September 11, 2001 airplane crashes into NYC’s World Trade Center, religious fanatics anticipated the approaching end of days, the births of anti-Christs, and a fiery Armageddon hell-on-earth. Nostradamus was seen as a key figure in predicting World War III, and calendric interpreters justified his forecasts by drawing parallels to the 2012 ‘end-of-the-world’ date.

A succession of social networking sites soon developed –Myspace in 2003, Facebook in 2004, and YouTube in 2005- making information sharing a lot more feasible. Opinion blogs and home videos surfaced as news reporters were tipped via Twitter, which was launched in 2006.
Let’s back track to that catchy song that influenced whole generations. Did those famous lyrics, “When the Moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars; then love will rule the planets and peace will steer the stars,” counter doomsday predictions by prophesizing hope?

According to Adishakti.org, “This Golden Age is destined to synthesize all religious regimes and free the minds of ignorance and delusion forever. Once enlightened, each human being will begin his or her individual journey within, and strive to become the new race of super conscious humans awakening seekers of Truth and the eternal Spirit, healing peoples of many tongues and nations in the process.” Could it be that the internet has assisted with this new sense of unity?

I look at the current Occupy movement as proof of this happening right before our eyes. Images of global protesters can be easily found all over the web. However, it was just weeks ago, after Dr. Carl Calleman’s disputed October 28, 2012 end date of the Mayan Calendar, that I witnessed ‘Occupy Wall Street’ images online convert to those containing the powerful messages of ‘Occupy Your Mind’ and ‘Occupy Yourself.’
To me, this speaks to the changes that many of us are experiencing. It is the death of apathy, the feeling of hope in the air, a desire for truth and knowledge, a longing for global unity, and the adaptation of our minds and bodies to the new age. And although an official date for the Aquarian Age was never set, who’s to say we’re not already living in it?

  1. I agree with you in that I think we are already in this new wave of vibrational energies. It's massive, people are feeling it and I also believe the internet has alot to do with it. So much information is available at the click of a button, stories, videos, pictures... and I LOVED Hair! What a great movie and yes I believe they KNEW this was going to happen!! I grew up in that era as a teenager and today's new wave of peace, love and happiness was felt and practiced then! Very exciting and great post!
